Back in June 2020, the yarn supplied in the knitting and crochet subscription boxes was the King Cole Giza 4ply. A beautiful mercerized cotton yarn in a vibrant red shade.
The yarn itself is a 50g ball and contains approx 175 yards (158 metres). It is machine washable at 40 degrees and comes in a wide variety of colours. Our subscribers received 4 balls in total. They loved this yarn
“The ply does not split and is so soft to knit up”Joanne – Knitting Subscription Box
I had some left over from the subscription boxes so decided to use that to make myself something. I came across the Peaks Crochet Tank Top from Hooked By Anna a little while ago and immediately thought of this one as soon as knew I wanted to make a top for me!
From the get go, the yarn was an absolute pleasure to crochet with. As it is a mercerized cotton it just glides over the hook without snagging or splitting. It is beautifully soft, whereas some mercerized cottons can be a little stiff. It also went a very long way. I completed the top in a large size using just 3 full balls and about 30 metres from a 4th ball.
“Superb yarn in such a vibrant colour. It was so soft when crocheted up and washed beautifully”Pam – Crochet Subscription Box
It was easy to block the garment once I had finished it, stretching it ever so slightly to make sure it hit the right measurements. I had so many compliments when I wore the top for the first time. I have since worn and washed it multiple times. The nature of cotton yarn means it does stretch slightly when worn for a few hours but it didn’t pull that much, maybe about a cm if that! Once washed it sprung back into shape really quickly.
I haven’t noticed a fade or colour run when washing the top in the washing machine but I am pretty particular about not washing bright colours with light colours – I’ll always remember the disaster of a rogue shirt with red stitching in with a pile of white work shirts!
It is definitely a yarn I will be using again!
